The Wake

PERFORMANCE, WRITING

Jane Packman Company‘s The Wake is a celebration of the passing year, for an audience of around thirty people.

I worked with Jane and Lucy Ellinson to conceive, create and develop the initial concept for the performance.

“The Wake is a beautiful swaggering pleasure.”
– AUDIENCE MEMBER, 2012

Later that year, we put the performance together in a fairly intense two week making phase. During that time I co-wrote the show – including a vitriolic sweary rant that tumbled out of me during an early writing session – alongside Francesca Millican-Slater, with facilitation and direction from Jane. I also created a simple lighting design for the show, and managed the installation process for the sensory-installation in which the performance was located.

“Loved the music, the words and the opportunities to take part and reflect on the year!”

For the shows, I also took on a ‘supporting’ performance role: I helped to welcome audience members into the space; accompanied by Fran and Jane I read out short messages contributed each night by our audiences, and I even playing the trumpet(!).

The Wake was produced by Jane Packman Company, and originally performed at mac Birmingham in 2012.

Subsequently, we were commissioned to re-make The Wake to celebrate 2013. These performances took place at Theatre in the Mill in Bradford. In preparation, Fran and I spent a brilliant fortnight exploring Bradford and meeting local people, before we rejoined the rest of the company in rehearsals.
